The town was named after Col. James Girdwood, who established a mining operation near here in 1901. Today, Girdwood has a substantial year-round community and a flourishing seasonal population, thanks to its appeal as both a winter and summer resort destination.

Girdwood has a post office, library, clinic, laundromat/showers, bookstore, and a grocery store with gas. Walk-in tent sites at Girdwood Campground, next to Forest Fair Park. The only RV campground in the Girdwood area is at Crow Creek Mine on Crow Creek Road. Overnight RV parking is available at the Alyeska Resort day lodge parking area.|
