Remembering Kasatochi
I enjoyed Ned Rozell’s article about Kasatochi Volcano in the Dec./Jan.2010 issue (“A Gray New World,” Page 62).I fished the Aleutians and around Kasatochi for many years, and finally climbed the volcano one beautiful day in 1989. The caldera water was a striking emerald green like no other I have seen.In addition to thousands of birds, there was a large sea lion rookery, which, I am sure, has vanished as a result of the eruption.

Which Way?
In 1981, I hiked the Chilkoot Trail (Feb. 2010, Page 28). Serine Halverson states she flew south over the Tongass National Forest. I think she meant north.

Picking on Palin?
I object to two things in the Feb. issue: nothing being colder than Alaska in February unless you put Sarah and Levi in the same room (“Sourdough,” Page 80) and the cartoon of a tourist asking, “Is that Russia?” (“Say What?” Page 12). Mr. Whitekeys, whoever the Hell he is, is a jerk. Why not an honest article about Sarah Palin?
Rosemary Piper Winona Lake, Ind.
Being skewered by Mr. Whitekeys’ humor has been a rite of passage for Alaska politicians for nearly 30 years, so we’re pretty sure Sarah Palin was ready for it.For a full—and honest— article on Palin, see our February 2008 issue.
Editor Correction: The mountain behind Sitka on Page 39 of our Feb. issue was misidentified. It is The Sisters.
