Description:
People often ask me why I want to visit photograph brown bears in Lake Clark National Park at the beginning of the summer rather than during the peak of the salmon run later in the season when the bears are fishing for salmon. Although it is exhilarating to watch bears chase salmon, I find more photo opportunities with the bears earlier in the season. One thing bears will do on a more regular basis at this time of year is clam on the beach at low tide. This boar was aware of our presence but continued with his chore of digging up clams. He pulled this one up and I was able to capture the shot of the clam on his paw just as he lifted his eyes toward the camera.
